When it comes to recruiting the next generation of skilled tradespeople, Fosters Kraus Plumbing, Heating & Air is proving that a little creativity and mentorship can go a long way.
Last year, Shelly Kraus, President of Fosters Kraus and her HVAC service manager Scott Hendryx, visited a Kirkwood Community College HVAC class to introduce students to real-world career opportunities. They shared how students could explore paid internships across different departments at Fosters Kraus, from HVAC service and installation to plumbing and new construction. The goal? Let students find their fit through experience.
Those internships were flexible and hands-on. Students scheduled ride-alongs based on their availability, getting a firsthand look at the work and culture of the company. “Your job right now is to soak it in,” Shelly told them. And they did.
Four students: Stetson, Jack, Caleb, and JT really stood out. “We knew most would be back to work here,” Shelly said. “They genuinely wanted to be here.”
All four were offered full-time roles after graduation. Once hired, they jumped into seasonal maintenance work like AC cleanings and preventive tune-ups, change outs and new installation, and plumbing service. Jack and Stetson were even given their own work vehicles, reinforcing the trust Fosters Kraus places in its team.
But the investment doesn’t stop there. Fosters Kraus funds participation in a four-year HVAC pre-apprenticeship program. So far:
- 3 employees have completed the program
- 11 are currently enrolled
- Fosters Kraus covers the cost (which ranges between $1,600–$2,200 per student per year)
- All apprentices are paid, can earn their journeyman certification, and stay on full time
Fosters Kraus didn’t wait for the perfect candidates to apply, they went into the classroom and created a talent pipeline tailored to their needs. It’s not just a smart hiring strategy, it’s a long-term investment in people, purpose, and the future of the trades.
