A Student's Journey into Healthcare: An Inside Look

Published Wednesday, July 17, 2024

As a student at Linn-Mar High School, Emma Friedman has always been interested in the healthcare field. This passion led her to participate in the partnership between MEDCO, Mercy Medical Center and Kirkwood Community College Pre Health Academy, which collaborates with local schools to provide students with hands-on healthcare experiences. This partnership aims to offer students a glimpse into the medical profession and helps bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications.

Friedman's decision to join this program was influenced by a friend's positive experience working at a nursing home. “I felt relieved knowing that I could get a job at the hospital and begin my journey in healthcare. The application process was initially daunting, with many steps to navigate. However, detailed slides and orientation sessions explained everything well, making it manageable. The feeling of independence, managing job responsibilities, and the support from coworkers and trainers have made it a rewarding experience,” said Friedman.

Work started at the end of May, with about 15 hours a week. Currently, the orientation phase is ongoing, but managing patients and a personal schedule will start soon. “My boss Paul is incredibly supportive and allows me to choose my hours, with a minimum of four-hour shifts. My role as a Patient Care Technician involves various tasks like assisting patients with their care needs, taking blood sugars, transporting patients, and charting their information,” Friedman explained.

The training process has been smooth, thanks to dedicated coworkers and the Patient Care Tech who has been guiding Friedman. “Paul's passion for his job is contagious, and his kindness and dedication have greatly influenced my decision to one day work at Mercy. He is constantly involved and ensures that all new employees understand their roles and responsibilities.”

A tour of Mercy Medical Center heightened her excitement for a career in healthcare. Friedman aims to become a NICU nurse, drawn to the relationships formed with patients and the ever-changing challenges of the medical field. This job provides a solid foundation for her future in nursing. Friedman is set to take the CNA exam in August and looks forward to advancing her career.

“One surprising aspect of this experience was realizing that high school students could secure a job in a hospital. I always assumed I must attend nursing school first. This opportunity has set me up well for nursing school and beyond,” remarked Friedman. Her advice to future students is to take chances and not let fear hold them back. “I almost didn’t apply out of fear of not getting the job, but I am so glad to have taken the leap!”

Friedman will be attending the University of Iowa School of Nursing this fall, with plans to continue working part-time at Mercy Medical Center.

Friedman’s journey into healthcare through the MEDCO and Mercy partnership has been a fulfilling experience. It has provided her with practical skills, professional connections, and a clearer path towards the goal of becoming a nurse. For those considering this path, she encourages embracing the opportunities and challenges that come with it.

Way to go, Emma!
