Empowering Tomorrow's Caregivers: Allie's Journey Exploring Healthcare

Allie Katuin is a soon to be Senior at Linn-Mar High School. Moving to Marion in her freshman year was a big change, but one that ignited her adventurous spirit. It was in Marion that she found an opportunity that would shape her future.

Her interest in healthcare was sparked early on, partly inspired by her grandmothers who were both nurses. When she heard about the partnership between Mercy Medical Center, Marion Economic Development Corp. (MEDCO), Kirkwood Community College and the local school districts offering hands-on healthcare experience to high school students, she knew she had to be a part of it.

"I didn’t know I would be so interested in healthcare," Allie explained, recalling her decision to join the Biomedical Strand of Venture Academics. Although the majority of students pursuing this opportunity have been made aware of it through the Patient Care Academy at Kirkwood Community College, Katuin discovered it during her time in Venture. "Through Venture, I was connected to this role at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. This gave me a chance to see healthcare beyond what I imagined. It wasn't just about doctors and nurses; there is so much more—occupational therapy, phlebotomy, even forensics." Venture Academics, led by Linn-Mar High School, allows students to earn high school credit by meeting Iowa Core standards and applying knowledge to real-world projects.

Allie is in her second summer of working at Mercy. She enjoys learning alongside other healthcare professionals. "It’s so much more than a job shadow, it allows me to really get a sense of the culture" she recalled with a smile. "Being here, part of the team, making sure patients are comfortable—it feels important. They treat us like future colleagues, not just students."

The experience wasn't just about learning clinical skills; it was about understanding teamwork and community. "You really rely on each other in healthcare," Allie reflected. "It's like a puzzle where everyone has a piece. That's what makes places like Mercy special—the encouragement to grow, to not stand still."

Mercy isn’t just a workplace for Allie; it has become a community that supports her growth. "They want you to be your best self," she said. "Even when I had doubts, there was always someone to guide me. They made sure I could balance school and work, and there was always room to ask questions and explore different roles."

Transitioning from school to the workforce hasn’t been without its challenges, but the support system around her made it smoother. "Starting was overwhelming," Allie admitted. "But once I settled in, it was amazing. The bridge provided by Linn-Mar and MEDCO, between school and real-life experience—it was exactly what I needed."

As she looks ahead, Allie sees possibilities. "I want to go to nursing school," she said confidently. "Maybe Kirkwood, maybe Mount Mercy. The choice feels clearer now because of the program. I know what I'm working towards."

Reflecting on her journey so far, Allie knows that this experience has given her more than just skills; it has given her direction and purpose. "It's the best opportunity I've had in high school," she said gratefully. "And even if I leave Marion someday, this experience will stay with me. It's about chasing curiosity, about finding your place, and knowing that wherever you go, there are people rooting for you."

As she continues her journey towards becoming a nurse, Allie carries with her the lessons of compassion, teamwork, and the belief that in healthcare, every role matters. Her path is just beginning, but with Mercy's support, she knows she is on the right track.
