LL Pelling is known as one of Eastern Iowa’s premier asphalt paving contractors. You’ve probably seen the red trucks with the state of Iowa outlined on the door. Another part of the “more than asphalt” is their ability to continue to reach higher in their sustainability efforts. In December 2021 LL Pelling was pleased to announce the installation of ground mount solar arrays at its Marion and Cedar Rapids locations. This installation was in partnership with ProStar Energy Solutions. Their Marion plant now includes 446 solar panels with 260 kWh each of power. The result of the investment in sustainable energy that allows the company to sell over 10% of their annual energy usage back to other users in the Marion community.

“We were looking to build upon our current sustainable and energy saving processes and thought, what else could we be doing,” says Brett Finnegan, President of LL Pelling. “We already recycle asphalt pavements into our hot mix, grind and recycle shingles from homes, and use motor oil as a burner fuel for drying aggregates. Why not power our asphalt plants with solar?”

The installation of solar panels in Marion and Cedar Rapids will help offset 806,100 kWh annually. According to the company, this is the equivalent to saving 17,500 acres of forest and removing 3,100 cars from the road.
