As the 2021 construction season transitions to the “cooler” time of year, sometimes it feels like the City of Marion is one big construction zone. Not only are public road and infrastructure projects visible in all corners of Marion, but private development projects are rising out of the ground at a quick pace. In the development community, we often say “private investment follows public investment.” In Marion, we are the perfect case study for that very statement.
You’ve all tracked the progress of Marion’s Central Corridor for almost a decade. With 6th Avenue now complete and 7th Avenue construction underway, our development community is ready to make new investment that will continue to support the growth and vibrancy of our precious community. In the Uptown’s core, Broad & Main on 7th represents the first phase of a $25M project to bring new living and business opportunities to the heart of the community. Further east, The Marion Lofts sits on a former industrial site and provides affordable housing options for individuals and families.
Nearly ten years ago the city of Marion partnered with Marion Economic Development (MEDCO) to invest in a new industrial park called the Marion Enterprise Center. Fast forward to today and more than $50M has been invested in private companies as a result of the public investment in critical infrastructure.
Just through the month of August, Marion has already recorded $45M of new construction starts. Plus, the MEDCO team is engaged with other projects that represent the potential of an additional $135M of new investment in the community.
When you drive around Marion and see road closed signs and backhoes, try to think about the new job opportunities, new housing options, and new amenities soon to come online. It takes partnerships.
