Dennis Fleege, the instructor for the Building Trades class at Marion Independent, shared new perspective on all the work that goes into the Community Build project. In the previous interview, Nick Glew, President of Marion Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO), and Dustin Kern, Project Manager for MEDCO, shared the financial and administration work that goes on. Fleege sheds light on his role as build coordinator, student supervisor, and contractor. He guides the students in developing the house, helping them not only in construction work, but also in preparing them for when they might have to buy a house. Construction work includes painting walls, installing windows, replacing the siding, restoring the drywall, etc. He works to keep the students on task, teaching them skills of time management and coordination, skills that will help them prepare for the real world. Fleege jokes that, “the hardest part of my job is not doing their work.” Alongside that, he must also arrange contracts with the plumbers, electricians, and all other labor sourced for the project. While this is Fleege’s first year in this position, the progress of the students shows the impact he has already made. To learn more about this project, check out this link: Community Build
