Prem here, Marion Community Build Intern. In the last week, I visited the build site, talked to the students, and interviewed Jim McGrew, President & CEO of Suburban Lumber. All this made me appreciate the community effort that goes into these projects.
Over the last few weeks, the students have been primarily working on the siding and the windows. The extensive and precise process of window installation baffled me. Two students, Austin Johnson and Carter Scott, gave me insight into how they install the windows. First, precise measurements are taken, which in this case is only one millimeter of tolerance allowed! Then, they nail a bracket of the exact measurements to ensure rigidity of the frame. After placing the new window within the bracket, they wrap Tyvek and apply silicone to seal the frame. Finally, a waterproof coat is applied for weatherproofing and durability.
My interview with Jim from Suburban Lumber also taught me a lot about the community involvement in student projects like this. Suburban Lumber has supplied much of the Community Build project with materials for the build. Students interested in accounting and marketing can find jobs and opportunities at Suburban Lumber! They are also a locally owned and operated company, enabling them to reach out to community and student efforts like the Community Build. Jim, a Marion graduate himself, shares that there are lots of upcoming opportunities at Suburban Lumber for students looking into that career field, so if you're interested, keep an eye out for it.
Suburban Lumber’s contributions have enabled students to explore career fields in real world and hands-on experiences. They’ve had an age old tradition passed from generation to generation of giving to the community through their local programs and donations.
Interior work on the home is around the corner, stay tuned to see what renovations will happen as we head indoors!
