This role serves as the banker responsible for the execution of SBA Program Lending for the Region.  As such, the ideal candidate will refer clients, coach, support and assist the Lenders throughout the Region with the origination, underwriting, approval, documentation to ensure SBA Guaranty compliance of that Lender’s SBA Loans. This will require developing relationships and training of FIB Region’s Commercial Teams on the nuances of SBA Lending.  Further, the ideal candidate will develop COI’s [e.g. CDC’s, SBDC’s, accountants, etc.] and other referral sources Region wide.  

 Establishes and maintains a “trusted advisor” relationship with clients and Lender’s based on knowledgeable advice that is aligned to the clients’ business objectives and lifecycle.  Develops and grows new business and builds/maintains strong relationships with prospects.  Drives financial performance through profitable revenue and growth, and quality credit.  Will not have own portfolio to manage but will be responsible for specific regions SBA growth, development, and portfolio servicing.

 Responsible to assist in SBA servicing and liquidation requests by being able to discuss process with the responsible lender and help facilitate the collection of needed items to continue to maintain the loan guaranty throughout the life of the loan.  Tasked with understanding servicing responsibilities and could assist the client and bank in recommendations that comply within SBA and Bank parameters.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: other duties may be assigned.

  • Achieves Regional annual production and growth goals for SBA loans, deposits and fees to ensure the bank meets its overall financial targets and conforms to credit terms.
  • Initiates and develops new business through outside business development activities and by supporting CML Relationship Managers with SBA loan requests within assigned Region.  Ensures ongoing contact with new clients to enhance client’s experience with FIB.
  • Deliver SBA Loan Program training to Branches and Lenders to promote program benefits and generate lending opportunities.
  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of the client’s needs based on the review and analysis of personal bank business financial data gathered through relationship reviews and personal meetings with a thorough understanding of business and personal cash flow. Actively participates in community organizations to source business development opportunities and demonstrates First Interstate Bank’s commitment to the communities we serve.
  • Builds client referral pipeline via identification and development of internal and external centers of influence. Successful business development skills.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth knowledge of Bank and SBA products and services as well as knowledge of competitors and competitive products.  Proactively promotes bank products and services and keeps clients informed of all the financial solutions FIB has to meet their needs.
  • Partners consistently with other internal business partners to uncover opportunities to deepen the client relationship. Acting as SBA resource in designated market; working with business partner and client to obtain necessary information to ensure a complete SBA credit application is obtained.
  • Works on complex problems requiring in-depth evaluation of client information. 
  • Remains current on all SBA process and procedures and works as the conduit between the region and the SBA Department to make sure initial eligibility is being met.
  • Makes decisions on loans and terms within established lending limits.  Analyzes credit to determine the ability of clients to qualify for borrowing requirements.
  • Maintains follow up on existing loans to ensure compliance with internal procedures and other required terms.
  • Research and study industrial, commercial, economic and financial situations relating to existing and new business.
  • Maintain compliance with all bank regulations for assigned job function and applies to designated job responsibilities:
  • Knowledge may be gained through coursework and on-the-job training.
  • Keeps up to date on regulation changes, including SBA SOP and Program guidelines. 
  • Follows all Bank policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and completes all required annual training.
  • May be asked to coach, mentor, or train others.

Training, certifications, or degree needed to qualify for the position:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university and four to six year plus (4-6) years’ experience in commercial lending or commercial credit underwriting with specific SBA Industry experience of at least 3 years.; exhibits advanced credit analysis and commercial underwriting skills, including accounting, financial statement and cash flow analysis experience; has completed Credit Analyst training; knowledge of commercial lending policies, procedures, practices and documentation; excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills; ability to work effectively with individuals and groups across the company to manage customer relationships; proficiency with personal computers and related software packages such as Word and Excel; knowledge of the bank’s risk-rating system, credit products and underwriting policies; working knowledge structuring credit products for small and medium size business in diverse industries; experience with asset-based lending, capital structure finance and trade finance. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk & use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
