Excavation Pipe Layer

The Pipe Layer will report to the Director and or Foreman for daily assignment(s).  The Pipe Layer is responsible for preparing and installing underground pipelines in preparation for road construction, in addition to having the general responsibility to provide support and assistance to the other Excavation and heavy equipment operators.

Essential Functions

  • Reports to shop at the start of shift for the daily assignments.  Routine duties are performed with minimal supervision with occasional check of work while in progress, and work being reviewed upon completion.
  • The responsibilities of the Pipe Layer include, but are not limited to: General install of sanitary and storm water sewer structures and pipe systems. 
  • Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
  • Lay out pipe routes, following specifications or blueprints, and coordinating layouts with supervisor.
  • Cut pipes to required lengths. 
  • Assist in aligning pipes during pipeline construction.
  • Align and position pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing. 
  • Check slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers. 
  • Connect pipe pieces and seal joints, using welding equipment, cement, or glue. 
  • Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices. 
  • Cover pipes with earth or other materials. 
  • Grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools.
  • Other general labor and construction related duties as required. 
  • Cleans up jobsites and fills scrap dumpsters by hand, using carts, wheelbarrows, and barrels.
  • Assists with loading or unloading trucks as needed.
  • Conducts weekly inventory of materials in storage area and reports to supervisor.
  • Unloads materials from vendors’ delivery trucks at storage area, checks accuracy of delivery ticket and signs receipt for materials.  Reports discrepancies to supervisor.
  • Assists with basic and minor callbacks.
  • Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures
  • Prioritizes assigned tasks.
  • Handles multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Equipment cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Training, certifications, or degree needed to qualify for the position:
High School or G.E.D. preferred Two-year degree or certificate from an accredited two-year college, university or technical school for Construction or Excavation. 2-years of equivalent related experience in the construction industry. CDL and or Class 5 Drivers License, or equivalent preferred. 3+ years experience in underground pipe laying preferred. Minimum 2 years experience in road construction preferred.
